Carbon Steel (CS)

Less costly than stainless steels, Carbon steels have good mechanical strength and are used for general applications where there are no special requirements. There are grades for use in both high and low temperature applications. Carbon steels have limited resistance to corrosion, which must be taken into account in the design (thickness calculation). Valves made from this material are typically painted to withstand their external environment. The type of environment can lead to the selection of particular coatings, which are often expensive or complex to apply.

Stainless Steel (SS)

Steel is considered “stainless” when it contains a minimum of 11% chromium in its alloying elements. The main advantages of stainless steels are their good corrosion resistance and excellent performance in low and very low temperatures. They are primarily used in the chemical, pharmaceutical, and food sectors, as well as in cryogenic applications. Some grades can be used at very high temperatures (>540°C). The percentage of each alloying element determines the grade’s ability to resist temperature and particular types of corrosive agents.

Despite their general resistance to corrosion, certain types of corrosion must be considered (intergranular corrosion, pitting, stress cracking) both in material choice and in its implementation.

Uses

Duplex and Super Duplex

Duplex and Super Duplex steels are austenitic-ferritic, and their main characteristic is resistance to intergranular corrosion and pitting.

Their mechanical properties are generally superior to conventional stainless steels. However, temperature is a limiting factor for their use (300°C). The austenitic-ferritic nature requires special attention during welded construction.
